Forest rangers in Da Nang have received a two-month old red-shanked douc langur, an endangered species, from an unnamed resident.
Le Van Nhi, head of Son Tra District Forest Management Department, told local news website VietNamNet on Tuesday the langur was about two months old and was given by a person who didn’t want to be named.
The langur cannot look for food by itself, so the department is taking care of it with support by Tilo Nadler, an expert from Germany’s Frankfurt Animal Association.
The Son Tra nature reserve is estimated to be home to about 170-200 red-shanked douc langurs. The animal, whose scientific name is Pygathrix nemaeus, is a species endemic to Vietnam and Laos, and are found in five central provinces of Vietnam.
It is listed in Vietnam Red Book and considered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature as an endangered species that needs urgent protection. .
